- dUFLP Goes Through a Major Change!
-
- If you are new to the dBASE Users' Function Library Project, you
- are not likely to notice the changes we are putting the library
- through.
-
- If, however, you are someone who has used the library before,
- please note the following:
-
- First: We are setting the library up as a cooperative effort even
- more so than in the past. There will be four librarians, and
- four main library files. The reasoning goes something like
- this:
-
- While dBASE IV, 1.0 and 1.1 are still being supported,
- Borland is only selling versions 1.5 and 2.0. dBASE IV, Ver.
- 1.5 is being sold because there are many developers and users
- who do not have the hardware requirements to use 2.0. In
- development is the product for Windows.
-
- However, we have a volunteer to attempt to keep a 1.1 library
- up-to-date (see below).
-
- In order to keep the dUFLP library working in a manner that
- helps the users, we have decided to create four separate
- versions of the library. One will be for dBASE IV, 1.1, one
- for dBASE IV, 1.5, one for dBASE IV, 2.0 and one for dBW. One of
- the reasons for this is to avoid the necessity of keeping
- outdated routines in the later versions of the library. For
- example, in dBASE IV, 1.5, there was no RAT() function, so one
- was created. In dBASE IV, 2.0 there is an internal function
- called RAT(), and therefore there is no need for the external
- (dUFLP) function to be contained in the dUFLP library for dBASE
- IV, 2.0 as well.
-
- The librarian for dUFLP 1.1 will be Gary Thoenen (CIS: 72770,1205).
- Gary will accept new routines for dBASE IV, 1.1 and 1.0 ONLY,
- and incorporate those in to the library, and update the
- documentation. See notes on version 1.5 about personalities.
-
- The librarian for dUFLP 1.5 will be Angus Scott-Fleming
- (CIS: xxxxx, xxxx). Angus will make sure that new routines
- for the library are incorporated in, and that the
- documentation is kept up-to-date as well. This will probably
- mean that, since Angus' personality and mine differ a bit,
- the docs and such will start to take on some of his
- personality as well.
-
- The librarian for dUFLP 2.0 will be Ken Mayer (the current
- and original librarian) (CIS: 71333,1030). The library for
- version 2.0 may easily contain many of the routines for 1.5,
- unless there is no need for them. See above.
-
- ****************************************************************
- * NOTE: If your routine will work in versions 1.1 through 2.0, *
- * you should send copies to all three of the above! *
- ****************************************************************
-
- Preparing in advance, the librarian for dUFLP/Windows will be
- Jay Parsons (CIS: 72662,1302). Sometime after dBASE for Windows is
- available, we hope to have a beginning version of the dUFLP
- library out there for it. No guarantees as to when, but ...
-
- Second: In order to facilitate this, and hopefully lessen
- confusion about the libraries, there will be a new numbering
- system for the library files posted on Compuserve (and
- anywhere else people wish to post these).
-
- The libraries will follow the same naming conventions for
- the three currently in existence, as well as the inevitable
- fourth version for dBASE for Windows whenever we manage to
- pull together a library for it.
-
- The new naming convention will be:
-
- LIBnnA where 'nn' is a number. 15 will stand for 1.5. 20
- will stand for 2.0. 'A' will be a letter from 'A' to 'Z'
- (amazing, eh?). So, the third version of the dUFLP library
- for dBASE IV, 1.5, would be named: LIB15C.ZIP.
-
- When the Windows version is released, the numbering will be
- the same, but the filename will be a tad different. Instead
- of LIB, the first three letters will be LIW (Lib for
- Windows). The rest of the naming convention will remain the
- same.
-
- The README.TXT file will include, as usual, the current version,
- and the information on how to contact the librarian, as well as
- information on each routine in the library. The WHATS.NEW file
- will be updated as always.
-
- We hope that in this manner, we can better serve you (and
- ourselves, quite frankly).
-

- *** All of the above will come into effect with the NEXT posting ***
- *** of the library. Be warned! Be prepared! It's exciting! <G> ***
